Kim Powell was born in Austin, Texas, and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. She considers herself an explorer of the arts, as she has spent her life as a creative, making music, acting in plays, and making visual art. Powell continued her studies in Spanish and painting at the Instituto de Allende, Academia Hispano Americana, and Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She spent 18 years south of the border before returning to the U.S. in 2019.
She currently lives between Austin and San Miguel de Allende. As a young child, spiritual experiences in nature and church with her grandmother led her to explore Tibetan Buddhism, yoga, non-dualism, and other esoteric modalities. Most recently, studying the philosophy of idealism, her colorful work connects with the viewer through abstraction. She aims to evoke a sense of familiarity, which points to our true oneness, and at the same time, the work touches on something mysterious outside of conscious awareness.
Bold, curving lines and vibrant, glowing colors take viewers on a visual journey. Sweeping movement and depth of layers act as a reflection of life and all its energy. Adjacent colors, shapes, and forms, like chords, have resonance, and by experimenting with those harmonies, Powell aims to leave the viewer soul-connected. The work invites viewers to visit a realm beyond the physical but instead in a space-between.
