Kim Powell was born in Austin, TX, and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. She considers herself an explorer of the arts, as she has spent her life as a creative, making music, acting in plays, and making visual art. She continued her studies in painting and Spanish and lived for 18 years in Mexico and Chile before returning to the U.S. in 2019.
Her colorful work connects with the viewer through abstraction. She aims to evoke a sense of familiarity, which points to our true oneness, and at the same time, the work touches on something mysterious outside of conscious awareness.
Bold, curving lines and vibrant, glowing colors take viewers on a visual journey. Sweeping movement and depth of layers act as a reflection of life and all its energy. Adjacent colors, shapes, and forms, like chords, have resonance, and by experimenting with those harmonies, Powell aims to leave the viewer soul-connected. The work invites viewers to visit a realm beyond the physical but instead in a space-between.
